School Smart: Finding Creative Cleaning Solutions

Hi. I’m Rosemary and I’m in charge of cleaning services for a large university. It really is a challenge. From graffiti on walls to chemical spills in science labs, I ensure that anything unsightly is cleaned up quickly and safely. In the course of my job, I’ve learnt that choosing the correct cleaning service for a task is the key to efficiency. I employ a general services company to do everyday cleaning, however, we regularly hire specialist carpet cleaners and definitely use qualified services for problems like chemical spills. Lots of my family members and friends call me when they have particular cleaning problems in their businesses. I figure that the knowledge I’ve collected over the years could be helpful, so I’ve started this blog. Do let me know if it’s useful and may your surfaces always be bright!

Four Things to Do Right Before a Carpet Cleaning

by Phillip Clark

Getting your carpet professionally cleaned is a great way to make it look clean, smell fresher, and last for longer. However, as this guide describes, there are a few things you should do right before a carpet cleaning to make the most of your experience.

Confirm the Details with Your Carpet Cleaning Company

The first thing you should do before a carpet cleaning begins is to confirm all of the details. Find out how much you will need to pay when you will pay, how the carpet will be cleaned, and how long you need to leave the carpet to dry afterward. If someone in your home has allergies or eczema, you might also want to discuss what types of shampoos and chemicals will be used, because as WebMD explains, they can trigger allergic conditions such as contact dermatitis. By having this discussion, you can ensure that everyone is on the same page and there won't be any surprises.

Remove Any Small Items from Your Carpet

After talking to your cleaners, it's time to start preparing the room. Remove any small items that can be easily moved, such as rugs that aren't getting cleaned, floor lamps, toys, beanbags, and anything else that will be in the way. You might also want to move any precious or delicate ornaments in case there's an accident. It might also be a good idea to vacuum your carpets in advance to remove any small items that could become lodged in the cleaning machine, but your cleaners will be able to advise you on whether this will be helpful.

Move Your Furniture If Necessary

Some carpet cleaners don't require that you move your furniture, or can offer help with moving furniture, while some prefer that it be moved before their arrival. Ask your cleaners what they would prefer. If you're going to move furniture, leave enough time to comfortably do so. If your whole house is carpeted, consider getting your carpet cleaned in summer so you can put furniture outside, or get your carpets cleaned over a couple of days so you don't have to fully empty your home.

Get Your Kids and Pets out of the House

Finally, you should get your kids and pets out of the house for the day. Take them for a fun day out, or take them to visit a friend or relative for the day. This is important because it will allow your cleaners to get on with their work, and ensure nobody is walking on the carpet before it's ready.

By communicating effectively with your carpet cleaners, removing small items from your carpet, moving your furniture if appropriate, and removing your pets and kids from your home for the day, you can make your carpet cleaning go as smoothly as possible for both you and your cleaners.
