School Smart: Finding Creative Cleaning Solutions

Hi. I’m Rosemary and I’m in charge of cleaning services for a large university. It really is a challenge. From graffiti on walls to chemical spills in science labs, I ensure that anything unsightly is cleaned up quickly and safely. In the course of my job, I’ve learnt that choosing the correct cleaning service for a task is the key to efficiency. I employ a general services company to do everyday cleaning, however, we regularly hire specialist carpet cleaners and definitely use qualified services for problems like chemical spills. Lots of my family members and friends call me when they have particular cleaning problems in their businesses. I figure that the knowledge I’ve collected over the years could be helpful, so I’ve started this blog. Do let me know if it’s useful and may your surfaces always be bright!

Basic Facts about Recycling Rubbish

by Phillip Clark

Waste disposal has become a much talked about industry in recent years as countries try to find new ways to encourage environmentally safe removal of rubbish so that it can be recycled and made into sustainable energy. For Australia, the focus is recycling on all levels: residential and commercial alike.

Here's information on what key recycling terms mean, how global leaders are doing with their recycling efforts, and how you can help Australia by recycling during your next project:

What is Diversion, Recovery, & Reprocessing Exactly?

In recent years, Australia has taken an active approach to increasing their diversion rate; diversion meaning the amount of waste that is prevented from going to landfills due to recovery and reprocessing, also known as recycling. This can be attributed to the promotion of recycling across the country and continued learning of Australian citizens. Globally, the world wants to recover resources rather than see them go to waste. The key is to turn your waste into a commodity that benefits the country.

What are Global Recycling Leaders Doing?

One of the global leaders in rubbish removal, Sweden, has found creative ways to remove rubbish and contribute to their country's energy sustainability, by turning the waste into fuel. What they've done is to develop technology that allows them in incinerate rubbish and then they reuse the energy that comes from the incinerator to power the country's heat and electricity.

To prove their investment to such practices, they began to charge neighbouring countries to safely incinerate their waste as well so that Sweden not only boosts their economy but also produces a sustainable energy to power the entire country with ease.

How Can You Contribute?

The first step to contributing to Australia's diversion efforts is to request a skip bin that is suitable to your needs. Skip bins range in size depending upon the scope of your project. With your skip bin, you will be able to recycle general waste, green waste, dirt and soil, rubble, heavy waste, and bricks and concrete. What you may not include is asbestos, hazardous materials, and foods of any kind. Some companies do offer separate asbestos removal, so if you know this may be a concern ask your skip bin company if they provide these services.

When filling your bin, be mindful not to fill it any higher than the top. Also, always place green waste above all other rubbish, at the top of your bin.
